The health and safety event categories are set up initially when the licence is set up within Acuite.  The categories are set up at a licence level, in order to ensure that all projects within an organisation are using consistent categories.

ADDING/EDITING HSE CATEGORIES

1.  To edit/add Health and Safety categories, go to the System Settings, Health Safety Form Settings menu.

2.  Go to the HSE Categories tab. Press the blue "Add New" button to set up the categories.

Type in a category name, code (that you want it to be abbreviated by), a short description and the numerical order (1, 2, 3, 4 etc) in which to display the categories on the health and safety event form.

NOTE: the description will provide users with guidelines for deciding which HSE category to assign an event to, when they are entering a health and safety event. Ie, the descriptions are listed below the health and safety category names on the event form.

4. Add any additional sub-categories by clicking the arrow on the right hand side and clicking on the Add Subcategory button and typing in the name, code and description.

5. Each category and sub-category is set up as 'leading' or 'lagging'. An event is considered to be 'leading' if it has the potential to cause harm, but hasn't reached that potential. Environmental, Observations and Near Misses are usually set up as 'leading' indicators. An event is considered to be 'lagging' if it has already occurred. First Aid, Medical Treatment Injury and Fatality categories are set up as 'lagging' indicators. The ratio of leading to lagging indicators is shown on the project dashboard, and is a good insight into whether a project is proactively tracking health and safety events before they happen (and therefore, possibly reducing the actual events that occur).

Here is a view of the project dashboard:

6. Go through each of the categories and sub-categories and click on the "Leading" or "Lagging" button.

7. Press the Save/Update button.  The event types that you just set up should appear on the event form.
